Celebrations of May 2nd in the Region of Madrid

 

The Region of Madrid celebrates May 2nd with an extensive cultural program of performing arts, music, dance, exhibitions, folklore, parades and a historical reenactment, from April 28th to May 2nd.

 

May 2nd is a special date for the Community, since it commemorates the uprising of 1808, in which the people of Madrid fought against the French occupation. The activities, which will take place in different public spaces and municipalities of the region, contemplate several proposals of historical recreation to enjoy in the street in a festive way, including the best music, dance, parades, the folklore of the mayos and the chotis.

In this edition, the "Asociación Histórico Cultural Voluntarios de Madrid 1808-1814", will offer a historical recreation of these events on April 30 in several scenarios of the capital. It will involve more than 300 people, horses and cannons, and will include a parade through historic Madrid. Afterwards, the Uprising of May 2nd will be commemorated in the Plaza de Oriente, which will conclude with the reproduction of hymns and the laying of a laurel wreath on the commemorative plaque.

The Puerta del Sol and the Plaza Mayor will also be the main venues of this celebration, with numerous activities. Likewise, 20 bands and musical groups of the Region of Madrid will perform in different municipalities of the region, such as the capital, Algete, Arroyomolinos, Casarrubuelos, Chinchón or Ciempozuelos.

The Casa Museo Lope de Vega will also commemorate this holiday. It will take place on April 28, 29 and 30 and May 2, with concerts by four young women who are giving a lot to talk about with their creative projects. Likewise, the Festival of the Mayas and Mayos, a festival declared of Cultural Interest and dating back to the Middle Ages, can be enjoyed on Tuesday, May 1 in El Molar. Villarejo de Salvanés will celebrate the Canto de Mayos on April 29.
