 EL VELLÓN

The municipality consists of two population centers -El Vellón and El Espartal- and the existence of two Muslim watchtowers shows that there was human presence before the ninth century. The most outstanding artistic heritage of the town is the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the Church of La Concepción and the watchtower.

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, in El Vellón, dates from the 15th and 16th centuries and is built with masonry and stone. It preserves important elements such as the main chapel, the sacristy and the doorways. It has two naves separated by four semicircular arches and the chancel and sacristy have ribbed vaults. The Church of the Conception, in El Espartal, has its origin in the XV and XVI centuries although it was rebuilt. Inside there is a baptismal font from the 16th century.

The watchtower of El Vellón, from the IX century, was part of the defensive and control group existing in the area. It is built of stone and has a cylindrical floor plan with a diameter of 6.3 m. and approximately 9.2 m. high. In the area closest to the ground, the walls of the watchtower were more than a meter thick.
