Pelayos de la Presa

PELAYOS DE LA PRESA

Since the second half of the XX century, Pelayos de la Presa has become a popular tourist destination, mainly due to the San Juan reservoir and the natural environment -with pine forests, oak groves, broom groves, pastures... -. Precisely, the lake is one of the favorite places to take a bath and to practice water sports.

Within the artistic heritage of Pelayos de la Presa stands out the Monastery of Santa Maria de Valdeiglesias, declared a National Historic Artistic Monument. The primitive building is from the late XII century and Romanesque-Mudejar style. Of its enclosure the Mozarabic chapel, the church, the cloister and the galleries stand out. At present it presents a certain degree of deterioration and is in private hands.

Other patrimonial examples of Pelayos de la Presa are the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción -from the XVI century and rebuilt after the Spanish Civil War-, the stone fountain in front of the Town Hall -where you can see the old pillory- and the prehistoric paintings in granite boulders in the place of La Enfermería.
