Tourism in Madrid
With the 'Rutas Verdes' (Green Routes) program, explore the region on foot or by bicycle will become an easy task since you can reach different locations with the routes proposed in the different public transport stations.
'Rutas Verdes. El transporte público, tu bici, la naturaleza y tú' is a program jointly carried out by the City of Madrid's Regional Transport Consortium and Metro de Madrid. The aim of this initiative is to encourage the journey, walking or cycling, of the natural spaces and parks of the Region of Madrid starting from the stations of public transport.
Sixteen routes make up this initiative of 'Rutas Verdes desde estaciones de transporte público': Metrosur, Ciudad Universitaria, Casa de Campo, Madrid Río, Monte de Boadilla, Parque Juan Carlos I, Vía Verde del Tajuña, Parque Regional del Sureste, Anillo Ciclista, Monte del Pilar in Majadahonda, Las Presillas, Monte Valdelatas, Parque Forestal Adolfo Suárez-Casa de Campo, Arroyo Meaques, Valdebebas and St. James's Way-Madrid-Segovia.
They have different difficulties, although most of the difficulty level is easy or moderate except for the aforementioned 'Green Route St. Jame's Way-Madrid-Segovia', which with 103 kilometres requires a little more preparation depending on the kilometres you want to travel a day. In this link you will find all the routes, as well as the necessary information about each one of them. In addition, you can download each route in PDF format and even in KML format for use on your mobile device.
If you feel like walking at the same time as enjoying the beauty of the region's landscapes, or you are a bicycle lover, don't hesitate and prepare your outdoor getaway. In the different public transport stations, which will simultaneously become into the starting point of each route, you will find posters detailing the kind of itinerary, the kilometres and the level of difficulty, so that each citizen can decide on the one suits to its physical shape.
Don't forget that you will be able to access the Metro and Light Rail stations with your bike throughout the day, except during peak hours, that is, from Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 9:30am, from 2pm to 4pm and from 6pm to 8pm.
Have you already decided which route are you going to start?
