Tourism in Madrid
Discover the extensive program that the Region of Madrid is offering between April 30th and May 5th to celebrate its festivities.
Puerta del Sol will be one of the main stages where you can enjoy free activities on May 1 and 2. These include a Zarzuela concert by the Orquesta y Coro de la Comunidad de Madrid and artists such as Antonio Carmona and Antonio Lizaina, among others.
But these are not the only musical activities planned, there will also be band concerts in 7 municipalities of the Region of Madrid: Alcalá de Henares, Casarrubuelos, Collado Villalba, Galapagar, Pozuelo de Alarcón, San Martín de la Vega and Torrelodones.
Likewise, several halls and theaters in Madrid, such as the Teatros del Canal, the Real Coliseo Carlos III or centers of the Red de Teatros de la Comunidad de Madrid, will host different musical and theatrical performances during the celebration of the Day of Madrid.
Colmenar Viejo, El Molar, Leganés and the Lavapiés district of Madrid will also be hosting the traditional Fiesta de las Mayas, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest by the Region of Madrid. With its origins in the 16th century, this festival revolves around the celebration of spring and owes its name to the term Maya, a girl or young woman from the village or neighborhood who presides over the popular festivities, on an altar of ephemeral materials composed of decorative or vegetable elements.
As every year, the program of activities for 2024 focuses on culture and offers the opportunity to visit several exhibitions in important museums, such as the Museo Picasso Colección Eugenio Arias, the Centro de Interpretación de Nuevo Baztán, the Casa Museo Lope de Vega and the Museo Casa Natal de Cervantes.
And it could not miss the historical component with the reenactment of the Popular Uprising of May 2, 1808, to which the celebration of this holiday is owed. Under the direction of the historical-cultural Association of Volunteers of Madrid 1808-1814, hundreds of people of different ages, horses, carriages and cannons will be brought together in a unique spectacle.
In short, between April 30 and May 5, the Region of Madrid becomes the perfect place to enjoy music and culture.
