Tourism in Madrid
Sierra Norte de Madrid is an attractive region for mountain tourism, but what's more, this Christmas, a special programme multiplies its appeal, read on!
Fans of hiking, climbing, winter sports or local gastronomy have the Sierra Norte de Madrid as a reference point. Rascafría, Buitrago del Lozoya, Somosierra and Patones are some of its best-known names, but this Christmas a host of plans and activities will allow you to discover its less explored corners.
In Torremocha del Jarama you can enjoy a magnificent Christmas market until the 8th. There you will find seasonal craft items with a special Christmas theme. The town of Prádena del Rincón also has its own Christmas market, which runs until the 5th.
Until 28 January you can discover the most cultural sierra with the exhibition "Arte intruso: la imagen reimaginada", in the town of La Cabrera, by the artist Lorena Olmedo.
There is no shortage of events in its most unusual towns, such as the Epiphany Party organised in Plaza Picasso in Buitrago del Lozoya, on 5 January at 17:45. And in Patones, until 8 January, you can visit a charity exhibition of Playmobil, a classic that will delight the little ones.
The classic mountain routes are not to be missed either. In the Sierra Norte, depending on the weather and snow conditions, you can go on walks of varying length and intensity. The Mendocino Trail crosses Torrelaguna and Torremocha del Jarama; the Lozoya Valley Nature Trail connects Rascafría with the town of Buitrago del Lozoya, and the Genaro Trail allows you to get to know the area around the Atazar reservoir in detail.
And if you're looking for adrenaline, remember that you can do winter sports in Puerto de Cotos. Cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing are just some of the activities you can enjoy, either on your own or under the tutelage of one of the courses offered by the resort.
