If you are thinking of getting away from it all, we suggest you travel around a town located in the Sierra de Guadarrama. In addition to discover its historic heritage, you will be able to explore the surroundings where you will enjoy marvellous landscapes in contact with the nature. A very appealing plan to get away from the daily routine. Are you joining us?
In the Basin of Guadarrama, we find this town of Madrid that little by little and, thanks to its excellent ubication, has become an active tourism claim. A town that remains faithful to its traditions and customs whose name owes its origin to the work that was done in the granite quarries, where stones were obtained from for the construction of Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, the Oriente Palace in Madrid, Nuevos Ministerios and the Valle de los Caídos, among others.
In the historic centre of Alpedrete you will find some places worth mentioning, like the Villa Square where the City Hall and Ntra. Sra. De la Asunción Church are located. You can also see the 'Monument to the Stonemason', clear evidence of the granite and the quarries, even though the town is currently dedicated to the service sector.
If the weather permits, and you want to be in contact with nature, you will be able to tour the area exploring its routes and livestock trails until arriving at 'la dehesa', one of the best ones in the region. Once there, you will be able to see, on the one hand, the old quarries, among which, due to the temperatures of this time of year, the ones flooded are frozen providing an even greater charm and, on the other hand, the old laundries recently restored.
At the highest and most northern point in Alpedrete, you can find 'Arcilleros', a relative unknown area but of great beauty, where holm oaks, oaks, junipers or rockroses, among other plant species, and animals, such as rabbits, foxes, different kinds of birds and protected amphibians, abound.
In order to reach this area, you just have to access 'Los Arcilleros' estate, at the end of Navacerrada street, because here is the starting point of a network of paths and livestock trails that will lead you to Guadarrama, Collado Mediano and Los Molinos.
You will also be able to arrive easily to the ruins of the old Mataespesa Castle, there take a few minutes to see from the viewpoint the beautiful views of the Guadarrama basin... although undoubtedly the most eye-catching places are the abandoned quarries around all the area. A marvellous show for your eyes that you cannot miss!
