Escapada por la Sierra Oeste: Villamanta y Villamantilla


Faithful to our weekly getaway, this time we suggest you to know two towns located in the Sierra Oeste: Villamanta and Villamantilla. Discover its heritage, enjoy in touch with nature thanks to its routes and even participate in their festivities. Don't miss it!

In the south-western part of the region is located the Sierra Oeste, an area in where predominates mountainous relief, and in which run the Alberche and Perales rivers giving to this area a variety of landscapes. As we advanced you, today we propose you discover with us this territory thanks to these locations of the Region of Madrid: Villamanta and Villamantilla.

We started our getaway Villamanta, a municipality located 39km from the capital city that runs between meadows, especially oaks and farmland. With a historical and artistic heritage worth seeing, include the parish church of Santa Catalina, the chapel of Nuestra Señora Virgen del Socorro and the known like Casa del Legionario. But the nature is another attraction of the region thanks to natural areas of interest like the gullies in the Grande stream, the Dehesa de Navacotonosa and the Dehesa de Valdeciervos. Discover the routes that have prepared for you, which will allow you learn more about the town.  

There are several festivities that are celebrated in the town. The closest will take place on 25th November on the occasion of the 'Festivity of Santa Catalina', with a pilgrimage in honour of this Holy.

Less than 8 kilometres separate this town of our next destination, Villamantilla, a population that despite its small size also has an interesting artistic heritage in which highlights the parish church of San Miguel Arcángel or the hermitage of San Antonio. Are also important its emblazoned houses as well as its traditional homes located in the Plaza de España, or the Hierro Bridge. 

But if yours is to be in touch with nature, here you can fully enjoy thanks to the routes that allow you to access not only to important points of interest, but you can watch several protected birds such as the Iberian Imperial Eagle, the Black Vulture and the Black Stork, as the natural environment of Villamantilla is located within the Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) called 'Encinares de los ríos Alberche y Cofio'.

There are several festivities and traditions of Villamantilla, the coming will take place next September. On the one hand, the 8th will be held a nocturnal pilgrimage on foot to the hermitage of the Virgen de la Poveda, in Villa del Prado; and the 29th of the same month the festivities in honour of San Miguel.
