Getaway to… Fresnedillas de la Oliva

If you want to spend a different weekend without leaving our Region, you can travel to the moon... or almost. Come to Fresnedillas de la Oliva, mix with its culture and its people, discover the 'Lunar Museum' or enjoy the outdoors with one of their routes and be amazed by its landscape. We are waiting for you!

Just a few 60 km. of the capital, it's located the town of Fresnedillas de la Oliva, in the basin of the Guadarrama River. The origin of its name was due to the ash trees that formed part of the ancient forests that populated the area in ancient times.

Walking through its streets you can see the main sample of artistic heritage, the church of St. Bartholomew the Apostle, in Baroque style. Other interesting points are the 'Parque del Caño', one of the most important points of recreation in the town, which houses a source of one pipe.

This area was in its day a war front, so it's not difficult to find Civil War fortifications and bunkers built of concrete and camouflaged with vegetation so they were hard to see.

You don't miss the 'Lunar Museum', whose inauguration took place in 2010 to coincide with the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the moon landing of Apollo 11 mission that took part the space station located in the town and that became home Station Spaceflight (MSFN). The museum, located in a wooden hut which is perfectly integrated into the landscape, is dedicated to NASA space missions and the former USSR. Among other curiosities you will see the first human footprint on the lunar surface, a model of a space capsule, astronaut suits, pieces from Neil Armstrong and much more.

But if you love the contact with nature, breathe fresh air and also accompanied by even little ones, in Fresnedillas you can enjoy La Puente, a circular route of medium/low difficulty, which takes its maximum splendor in the spring and autumn seasons. From the 'Lunar Museum' the path runs along a branch of the Cañada Real Leonesa Oriental, known as the Cordel del Puente of San Juan Merino or Cañada de las Merinas. Enjoy the landscape, a mixed forest of meadow of oaks, juniper trees, and ash trees or refresh you in the abundant streams that find in your path, lagoons and even puddles. Don't think twice and see more information on this route.
