Escapada a… Navalcarnero


Among the Alberche and Guadarrama rivers is located the Madrid town of Navalcarnero. This week, taking advantage of that soon will start its festivities, we suggest you this destination for a break and get to know closely this town that owns the title of 'Villa Real'.

Within the 'Villas de Madrid' program, it is the municipality of Navalcarnero. A tourist town full of charm that will captivate you from the first moment thanks not only to its interesting historical and cultural heritage, but their customs, gastronomy and natural enclaves. 

We begin with its historical and cultural heritage, which can meet thanks to pleasant strolls through its streets that will discover you interesting monuments and attractions including the Plaza de Segovia, set Declared Well of Cultural Interest, and Plaza Pozo Concejo, the Plazuela del Mercado, the Parish Church of Our Lady Assumption and San Jose or the Chapels of Veracruz and San Roque.

From 2 to 4 September, do not miss the 'Real Mercado Siglo de Oro' (Golden Age Royal Market), in which different dressed in period times offer concerts, animations, tastings and demonstrations of traditional crafts and other activities. This market commemorates the wedding of King Philip IV with his niece Doña Mariana of Austria, thanks to which was granted the town the title of 'Villa Real'.

If what you like is to be in touch with nature, one option is to explore the parks and gardens that are located in Navalcarnero, like the Park of Buenavista and Parque del V Centenario, or amaze you with its renowned Open Air Museum. But if you still want more, you can lose yourself in its wonderful natural landscapes

Its gastronomy is noteworthy because it has adapted to changing times incorporating new culinary trends. However are typical stews such as rabbit with potatoes and oyster mushrooms, the pickled partridges, or 'olla del segador', a variant of the Madrid stew. For the sweetest palates are typical buns butter oil and sugar. We can not forget that the town of Navalcarnero is known as 'land of wine', so in addition to test their 'wines', you can explore their routes and as the 'Museo del Vino'. 

Also, if you decide to visit the town these days you can enjoy its festivities in honour of "Our Lady of Conception' which are celebrated every year during the first fortnight of September, where in addition to touring the aforementioned market, you can participate in diverse sports activities, traditional night bull run or fun children's activities such as parades or recreational games, among others. On September 7 will be the spectacular displays of fireworks, and 8 will be the biggest day with the procession. To end this festivity the last day everyone can enjoy 'bull stew'.
