Escapada a... Getafe

This week, and taking advantage of the 10th edition of 'Getafe Negro', the 'Festival of detective novel of Madrid', from 14th to 24th October, we propose you to make a getaway to the town of Getafe. It's the main industrial and commercial centre in the south of the region, which with different attractions, are well worth a visit. Join us!

In the Regional Park of the Southeast, very close to the capital city, is located one of the most populated Madrid towns of the region: Getafe. It has long been known as the 'Cradle of the Spanish Aviation', as it houses a military air base with barracks and a take-off and landing runway 3,06 km long. It was here where Juan de la Cierva, inventor and Spanish aeronautical scientist, let fly the first gyroplane.

At the moment the town has been elevated to the category of Episcopalian Centre and has its own campus, the Carlos III University. Its historical centre has been declared of Place of Cultural Interest in the category of Archaeological Zone since the discovery of a Neolithic village, and remains of a necropolis, since prehistoric art has been an important aid to relegate the brutal vision that prevailed over human groups of prehistory.

Getafe hosts one of the best examples of Renaissance architecture in the Region of Madrid, we are talking about the Santa María Magdalena Cathedral, designed by the architect Alonso de Covarrubias, it was erected between 1549 and 1645 on a Mudejar church from the middle of the 14th century.

Other interesting constructions that you must include in your historical route by the municipality, are the Escuelas Pías, the Santos Justo y Pastor Church, the old jail, today Municipal Library 'Ricardo de la Vega', and of course the Hospital of San José, popularly known as Hospitalillo, which after its rehabilitation houses several dependencies of the City Council.

One of the most interesting points of the town, is the Cerro de los Ángeles, which was traditionally marked as the geographical centre of the Iberian Peninsula. There also are located the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, patron saint of the municipality; the Monuments to the Sacred Heart, built in 1919 and inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII, and the convent of the Carmelites.

From there, and thanks to the location of Getafe you can enjoy outdoor activities through the trails that run the natural enclaves of the municipality, which as we anticipated at the beginning, is part of the protected area Regional Park of the Southeast. In addition, around the banks of the Manzanares there are also routes for walking or cycling.

Getafe Negro

But the locality offers much more, and as we advanced you at the beginning, if you have decided to visit it during the next few days and you are a lover of the detective novel, you are in luck because from the 14th to the 24th of October, the tenth edition of the Festival de Novela Policiaca de Madrid 'Getafe Negro' will be celebrated. Presentations of books, talks, colloquia, poetic readings, round tables, concerts, micro-stories and even storytelling in Spanish and English for the youngest children will be held in different spaces in Getafe and the capital.

This intense programme for all audiences will focus on three key areas: 'El futuro del Viejo Continente', 'La libertad de expresión' and 'El secuestro del humanismo'. Moreover, in this very special edition, in which a country has not been invited as in previous editions, but rather a whole continent, Europe, the festival will address two issues closely linked to current affairs: the Guardia Civil as a literary character, and the terrorist violence of ETA.

As you see, now you have a lot of reasons to travel to this town. Would you like to meet us? Come to Getafe!
