GETAWAY TO SANTA MARIA DE LA ALAMEDA
Do you know Santa Maria de la Alameda? In the heart of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range, you will find this town which offers us endless possibilities to explore this area, discover its history and enjoy a different journey a few kilometres from the capital. Cultural heritage, traditions, gastronomy, nature and even ornithology. A real range of possibilities that we discover you below.
In the area known as Sierra Oeste, where the mountainous relief predominates, and watered by the Aceña and Cofio Rivers next to the streams of Hornillo and Tobar, is this town of Madrid that we visit this week.
With an interesting cultural heritage in which next to the Town Hall highlights the churches of Nuestra Señora de la Alameda and San Ramón Nonato, strolling through its streets will allow us to move to another era when we see its railway station or its Roman bridges of the Recodo and Mocha.
Nature lovers will find here an authentic haven of peace. They will also be able to explore the area in depth thanks to four proposed routes. On the one hand, the 'Cofio River Route', which invites us to take a pleasant stroll along the river; on the other hand, with the 'stream route', we will be able to take spectacular pictures of the area with our camera thanks to its panoramic views over the Paranera and Gredos mountain ranges.
The third route known as the 'Mirador Peña del Águila' starts from the own town. A path of low difficulty, but as in the previous route will show us the beauty of the environment with a breathtaking landscape. Finally, we find the 'Senda del Hornillo', which runs parallel to the river until we reach the waterfall, a route with medium difficulty from which we can see the Aceña reservoir.
If you like ornithology, Santa María de la Alameda is the ideal place to observe species such as the dunnock (Prunella modularis), the griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) or the red kite (Milvus milvus), among others, through the circular route 'Las parameras de Santa María de la Alameda'.
But as we mentioned at the beginning, this town also offers us the possibility to enjoy its traditions, patron saint festivities and of course, its gastronomy, based on local products with excellent veal and different mycological varieties.
