Getaway to… Manzanares El Real and its surroundings


A few kilometers from the capital, in the National Park of the Sierra de Guadarrama, is located Manzanares El Real. See this locality, one of the most emblematic of the region and enjoy nature, historical heritage and its gastronomy. Live the Region of Madrid!

If you want to spend a different weekend, this week we suggest you discover if you do not already know, one of the most historic towns of the Region of Madrid. Located at the foot of the Pedriza in the Regional Park of the Cuenca Alta del Manzanares, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1993, is Manzanares El Real.

Although there were prehistoric human presence, its settlement, dating from the thirteenth century. A late fourteenth century, Juan I gave the lands of Manzanares to Pedro González de Mendoza but these were taken over by other nobles until the eighteenth century, that returned to Mendoza family.

With an important historical and cultural heritage highlights, among others, the ruins of the old castle during the fifteenth century served as a fortress and was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1949. The church of Our Lady of the Nieves, located in the center of the village, the hermitage of Our Lady of the Peña Sacra, the cave paintings of the cisterns, and of course the New Castle or Mendoza.

Located close to the town, the castle's history dates back to the time of the Reconquista. Initially created as a defensive fortress quickly became into the residential palace of the Mendoza family. It has been restored several times and today offers an intensive program with days of old fencing, cinema festivals, choral music, and exhibitions among others. It should be noted that the dramatized visits further intensifies their activity.

Another attraction of Manzanares El Real is nature, in which highlights the presence of water due to its Reservoir, the Manzanares River and several streams that run through the town. This environment invites to know by walking or bicycle, or even activities like rock climbing.
