Escapada a… Loeches

When the weekend arrives it feels like making a different plan. This week we suggest you to visit the town of Loeches in Madrid, less than 20 kilometers from the capital, is located in the heart of the Alcarria of Madrid, one of the most beautiful and surprising areas of the region. Are you ready? Let's get started!

The history of Loeches is linked to the noble and Spanish politician Conde-Duque de Olivares, since it was he who promoted the Monastery of the Immaculate Conception, main architectural monument of the municipality, which popularly known as Convent of the Dominicans or Convento Grande, was declared a protected monument of cultural interest in 1982.

But if you are a lover of the artistic heritage, here you will enjoy in great part because this locality surprises those who visit it for its historical richness and its interesting heritage samples.

This is the case of the Parish Church of the Assumption of Our Lady, a beautiful example of Renaissance style dating from the sixteenth century, the Monastery of Saint Ignatius Martyr, or the already mentioned Monastery of the Immaculate Conception, Baroque style and work of Alfonso Carbonell, architect of the Palace of the Buen Retiro. Don't miss inside, the Pantheon of the Dukes of Alba designed by the architect Juan Bautista that remembers the Pantheon of the Kings in El Escorial.

During the month of February, the carnivals are celebrated so it is a good time to tour this town and let yourself be carried away by the good atmosphere of the bands and costumes in their 'Great Parade'. But there are other dates when you should not miss travel to this locality as in summer to see its Golden Age Market that will make you travel back in time thanks to the decoration of its stalls and different theatrical performances, or its patron saint festivities during the second weekend of September.

Of course the gastronomy is another of the strengths of the locality, good proof of this is its famous 'Ruta de la Tapa', an authentic showcase of history and gastronomy that you can't miss during the month of May.

And what about their medicinal waters? The town of Loeches is also known for the water quality of its springs. In fact, it was an important tourist health destination in the nineteenth century, thanks to two spas, currently closed: the Margarita and La Maravilla.

Now there is no excuse to do this through the Region of Madrid. We're waiting for you!
