Church in Sierra Oeste

The westernmost part of Madrid is a little known area of our region that, however, is home to many secrets, corners and towns where you can enjoy many activities, views, traditions and history. Read on!

To the west of Madrid the relief becomes mountainous, full of hills and valleys through which rivers like the Alberche or the river Perales flow. You can find oak groves in the area, as well as old mills dating from the eighteenth century, as there was a strong agricultural tradition in the area.

A few kilometers from Madrid, you can immerse yourself in the rural environment of small towns such as Villamantilla, which preserves a church from the 16th century, the Parish Church of San Miguel Arcángel. Villamanta, near the municipality, also preserves an important historical heritage, with the Parish Church of Santa Catalina, the Ermita del Socorro de Nuestra Señora and the one known as "Casa del Legionario".

Other points of interest are also located in the area, such as the Madrid Deep Space Communications Complex, in Robledo de Chavela, a NASA-owned space tracking station that can be visited by the general public.

In addition to the numerous historical heritage, the Sierra Oeste is home to places to enjoy the environment through other activities. In the vicinity of Cenicientos, for example, you can take impressive panoramic photographs of the environment, as well as hiking or cycling numerous trails.

The San Juan reservoir is also located in this area of our region. Although it is winter and the bathing season is closed, this enclosure is the only one in the region that allows motorized water sports, so if your idea of a getaway includes the practice of these sports, this is your place!
