Do you want to explore Sierra Norte de Madrid this Autumn? The municipality of Buitrago del Lozoya, located at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama, has an ideal location for this, as well as offering a multitude of routes and trails for walking or cycling. Pay attention!
Hiking lovers: Buitrago del Lozoya has up to 8 routes for walking, and if your hobby is cycling, 4 of these trails can also be traveled by bicycle. Most of these routes are simple and are designed to enjoy the natural environment, walk and get to know the surroundings. For those looking for a little more effort, two of them are classified as medium difficulty.
The path of the Espadaña de la Trinidad and Calicanto bridge begins to the north of Buitrago. The path runs between stone walls, next to the Old Bridge, is of simple layout and should be walked on foot. You can see the Calicanto bridge, built in 1579 to communicate the town with Pedraza, Segovia and Valladolid.
Another option for walking is a path along the banks of the Lozoya River. Also of simple layout, it skirts the river until arriving at the reservoir of Puentes Viejas. It is a very short trail but it allows you to take some good pictures of the natural environment.
If cycling is your thing, you will be enthusiastic about a path along the Riosequillo reservoir, which goes from Buitrago to the Riosequillo Recreational Area. But the more adventurous can continue from this area to reach the town of El Cuadrón, along the authentic Cañada Real Segoviana.
The path of the Gariñas can also be covered by bicycle. It is 8 km that crosses the large pine forest of Gariñas near the reservoir. The warm months offer the best combination of weather and vegetation to enjoy this route, take note!
If you are looking for more strenuous routes, you have the option of an ascent route to the Cinco Villas hill, to be done on foot or by bike, and enjoy wonderful views from the top of El Picazuelo mountain. And if you are in the mood for more, you can also ride along the Cañada Real Segoviana on a route of about 20 km until you reach the town of Bustarviejo, where you will have privileged views of the Sierra de la Cabrera!
There is also the possibility of horseback or road routes, choose your route!
