Cinco planes para redescubrir la Sierra Norte

Visiting a museum with works by the brilliant Picasso, touring the town that saw the birth of Cardinal Cisneros, getting lost in the incredible landscapes of the Sierra del Rincón, travelling back in time to learn about the ways of life of our ancestors, or discovering an authentic archaeological site, are just some of the plans you can make as a family in the Sierra Norte. Below you will find all the details!

Once again, we go into the Sierra Norte, to enjoy all that it has to offer, because although it is very close to the capital, it invites us to get lost in its almost virgin landscapes, to travel along its secondary roads through the little villages that we find on our way, and even to participate in the different activities that are proposed every season.

Here are some ideas, where do you want to start?

Museo Picasso-Colección Eugenio Arias
Our first stop will be in the Madrid town of Buitrago del Lozoya; there you will find this unique museum, dedicated to art and friendship, which since 1985 has been located in the halls of the Town Hall and houses a collection of works that Picasso gave away over the years to his great friend the barber Eugenio Arias, who gave them to his native land in 1982. Taking advantage of your visit, you can always tour this town, which thanks to its walled area, National Monument since 1931, was declared a Historic-Artistic Site and a Site of Cultural Interest in 1993.

And from one town to another, because we now travel to Torrelaguna, a town located in the Jarama Valley region, whose beauty, thanks to the mixture of artistic styles, managed to have it declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1974. Once there, you will be able to discover its most important monuments such as the church of Santa María Magdalena, or the Abbey of Concepcionistas Franciscanas Descalzas among others, as well as enjoy a pleasant walk around the surroundings to the old dam of the Pontón de Oliva, letting yourself be carried away by the beauty of the surroundings.

Sierra del Rincón
Lovers of outdoor activities will find in the Sierra del Rincón Biosphere Reserve the perfect setting to explore the area through different hiking routes, or even the possibility to participate in one of the guided tours to the Hayedo de Montejo. In addition, in the nearby town of Puebla de la Sierra, all those who wish to do so can see a very special open-air sculpture exhibition in 'El Valle de los Sueños'.

Route through the «Formas de vida del ayer»
We continue in the Sierra del Rincón, but with a little different plan, with which you can get to know the identity of the Sierra Norte in depth. It is a route that will take you through different towns in the region such as La Hiruela, to see up close the only flour mill in the Region of Madrid, Horcajuelo de la Sierra and its Ethnological Museum, or Piñuécar-Gandullas, where you will find the Reguera de Piñuécar, a natural canal where water was collected from streams and springs to be taken to nearby towns. From this link, you will have access to the complete route.

Route for Archaeology Lovers
Finally, archaeology lovers are in luck, since as in the previous proposal, through this route you will learn about the traces left by past societies. The necropolis of Sieteiglesias, the Valley of the Neanderthals in Pinilla del Valle, or the church of Santo Domingo de Silos, in , where several treasures were found, are only a brief sample of what you will find on your way.
