TROMPE L'OEILS AND FRESCOS
Scattered throughout streets, squares and churches are the murals of the artist Alberto Pirrongelli, who once painted posters for the Gran Vía movie theaters and is now based in Navalcarnero.
Who is Alberto Pirrongelli and what does he do?
Born in Don Benito (Badajoz) in 1942, at the age of 13 he painted his first poster for the cinema in his hometown, and a few years later he emigrated to Madrid, where for decades he painted the posters announcing the big Hollywood premieres on Madrid's Gran Vía.
Venetian vaults, stores, balconies, trees, storks and even some of Navalcarnero's neighbors are portrayed in these paintings. Trompe l'oeil paintings not only have an aesthetic function, but can also have an instructive function.
What is a trompe l'oeil?
The trompe l'oeil or "trap before the eye" is a type of painting that tricks the eye into believing that there is a third dimension where there is none, creating a sensation of depth through perspective. This art has transcended the works of the Renaissance and Baroque to cover the facades of the cities.
