PHotoEspaña, the 'International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts' celebrates its twentieth anniversary presenting from 31st May to 27th August, 100 exhibitions with works by 514 artists and a program of 20 professional activities and for audiences that take place in 62 venues.
The lovers of photography will be able to enjoy for three months of this festival that was launched in the year 1998, and that at the moment it has been consecrated like one of the events of visual arts of the world and international forums of photography more recognized worldwide, in fact this year it extends its activity to America, Asia and Australia.
This year marks the celebration of the 20th anniversary and its main objective is to carry new ideas and investments that will consolidate the Festival both nationally and internationally.
Twenty years later, the festival has relied on Alberto Garcia-Alix, the National Photography Prize, which he highlighted in 1998 with his exhibition in PHE, with the section 'Carta Blanca' which includes six exhibitions selected by him as well as an activity.
Under the title 'La exaltación del ser', six heterodox artists influenced by García-Alix will show their work in various venues in the capital, that are Karlheinz Weinberger, Antoine d'Agata, Pierre Molinier, Anders Petersen, Paulo Nozolino and Teresa Margolles. Also will be carried out the publishing laboratory 'De lo sublime y heterodoxo', developed by the independent publishers Verónica Fieiras and Gonzalo Golpe and directed by Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin.
In addition, as in previous years, the festival will have two sections: on the one hand the Sección Oficial PHE, which will include 22 exhibitions of artists such as Peter Fraser, Elliott Erwitt, Gabriele Basilico and Carlos Saura to name a few; and on the other the Festival Off that with the aim of encouraging the promotion and development of the photographic market, will exhibit the works of Roger Ballen, Alberto García-Alix, Alex Webb & Rebecca Norris Webb, Cristina Macaya, Emi Anrakuji, Mariana Cook, Cristobal Hara Kathy Ryan.
In parallel with the exhibition program, PHotoESPAÑA develops programs for professionals each year, including Trasatlántica PHE and other initiatives that promote the exchange of knowledge between professionals and photographers. There will also be different activities such as workshops, outdoor projections, a kaleidoscopic contest, and in the framework of the celebration of the fourth centenary of the Plaza Mayor of the capital, citizens will be invited to be photographic models with ¡Retrátate!.
