Very close to the capital, in the town of San Martín de Valdeiglesias, is located the Reservoir of San Juan, an authentic oasis that gives us the chance to refresh ourselves when the high temperatures visit the city. If you like sports, or just want to relax, don't miss our trip to the well-known 'beach of Madrid'.
This week we travel to the Sierra Oeste of Madrid, to San Martin de Valdeiglesias. It has a great landscape richness that is due in great measure to the Alberche and Cofio Rivers, and the pynion pine.
In addition to exploring the area to get a closer look at its historical and artistic heritage where you will find churches, hermitages or the Coracera Castle, one of the symbols of the population declared Good of Cultural Interest, you could do a great number of outdoor activities like strolling, horse riding, cycling or multi-adventure, and even visiting the 'Bosque Encantado', a botanical garden unique in Europe that houses living sculptures of impossible sizes made by the best topographical artists of Europe, where there is also located on of the few natural cascades of the Sierra Oeste, the Barbellido waterfall.
But when the high temperatures no let-up, pools, rivers and 'beaches' of fresh water, offer a relief to the stifling summer heat where there is no coast and of course, become the main objective of the people from Madrid and tourists. This is where the protagonist of the summer appears: the San Juan Reservoir.
It's undoubtedly one of the most visited destinations in these dates as it has an exceptional leisure area. Formed by the Alberche River, tributary of the Tagus, it possesses 15 kilometres of coast, and at the moment it's one of the four zones suitable for bathing.
In the reservoir, there is the 'Real Club Nautico de Madrid', a true institution for all lovers of nautical activities, which since it opened its doors in 1958, promotes the sport of sailing and competition.
It has a well-known 'Marina' so it's also possible to rent a boat with or without skipper, and thanks to the different companies that are in the zone you could practice aquatic activities like trips in kayak and paddle surf, to realize water skiing, to take a boat trip or have fun doing acrobatics with 'fly board'.
Of course, you always have the option to rest while you sunbathe, take a refreshing dip and even enjoy an improvised picnic in any of the enabled areas. So you already know, wear comfortable clothes, take your tan and enjoy your getaway.
